It's a fairly simple expedition to take the subway to Long Island City and catch the East River Ferry down to Brooklyn, so that's what we did a couple Saturdays ago.
We thought about it pretty hard... we're nearly sure this has to have been Josephine's first boat ride. She was into it-- enjoyed the wind and the churned up water. I've decided I must be a bit on the slow, southern side of life, because this ferry trip was a bit like the bug carousel at the zoo; once we were going, I was pretty shocked at how we were GOING. I remember thinking our ferry captains were perhaps college-age frat guys fulfilling a thinly veiled longing for a speedboat and lake.
But that's okay. I don't mind a little amusement-park thrown into my daily life. Just keep getting surprised by it.
The carousel under the Brooklyn Bridge was your more typical, granny-paced ride. In fact, we had to go twice, because the first time I accidentally put her on a horse that didn't even go up and down! Unacceptable.
I don't remember details, but this carousel has some degree of fame in these parts; something about it being super old and them spending many years and millions of dollars restoring it. (The millions of dollars part is not a vague exaggeration. I remember reading that and having a "what is this world coming to" moment.)
We walked down the waterfront park/boardwalk thing to Pier 6, which has some cute playgrounds for kids. I thought the part with all the swings was pretty neat. Josephine couldn't quite stay on the one below-- one slip off and she was done riding it-- though I think she'd have stayed there and pushed it for hours if we'd let her.
This was one of our first truly warm days. We all got a little too much sun, did a LOT of walking, and were plain worn out by the time it was done... evident in Josephine's slap-happy expression on the ferry ride back (pictured below) and my swollen, achy, third trimester legs (not pictured below-- you're welcome).
Good day, on whole, though. Despite getting pretty worn down, I do enjoy categorizing these physically exhausting adventures as "excellent exercise"-- which is about the only thing I'm doing right (albeit on accident) when it comes to "keeping the baby small" (that is the one piece of advice every doctor/midwife keeps recommending to me). Josephine was 8 lbs 7 oz, and yes, I do feel very motivated to keep this baby smaller in hopes of a successful VBAC, but it is STILL insanely hard to avoid the extra calories. I just hate feeling fatigued! With restrictions on caffeine, if you want energy, you eat! It's hard to tell myself, "no don't eat that sugary thing that will perk you up at least temporarily. Just sit there and feel completely depleted instead." I have a three year old with boundless energy; it's tough to keep up!
Anyway, I'm 32 weeks along, and according to the babycenter e-mail that arrived in my inbox today, faithfully reminding me of the impending pain (and subsequent joy) of late July, our little guy should be encroaching on 4 pounds at this point. He'll put on 30-50% of his birthweight in the next 7 weeks. So I'm going to try to be ESPECIALLY MINDFUL in this home stretch of how much plumping I let him do. That's my public profession, in hopes that it will help my sticktoitiveness. :-)
Failing that, we can at least take comfort in the fact that physically exhausting adventures will likely keep popping up. And we'll get a clue about his weight status in a little over a week; my OB here sends patients in for a growth sonogram at this stage, so that's on the calendar for a week from Monday. Here's hoping all my inadvertent exercise is paying off!
